Kimberley Teira, a Kumon instructor, was deeply affected by the devastation caused by hurricanes in her sister’s community. “There was so much damage there from the flooding from the hurricanes,” she recalled, her voice filled with empathy. “when she told me about it, it was just awful. I thought,‘I can help. I can do something.'”
Teira’s compassion inspired action. She reached out to her community, igniting a heartwarming wave of generosity. “I have the most amazing families,” she said, her eyes sparkling with pride. “One boy brought his favorite book and gave it to me. I was a little teary from that. And another parent whent to a bookstore and brought a bunch of books to us from there. It was overwhelming.”
This outpouring of support for her local community sparked a larger movement. Kumon instructors across the United states, Canada, and Mexico, joined by the corporate team, launched an annual book drive with a powerful purpose: to provide books to organizations dedicated to supporting families in need.

Reaching out to her network of Kumon families, she sparked a movement of extraordinary generosity. Their outpouring of support ignited a flame that would soon become a nationwide initiative.
“It all started after seeing the devastating impact of hurricanes on our community,” Teira shared. “my sister, a teacher, shared the heartbreaking reality of the situation.I knew I had to do something to help, so I reached out to my Kumon families, and their generosity was simply overwhelming. Seeing their rapid and compassionate response was incredibly inspiring.”
This local act of kindness resonated far beyond their immediate community. “Kimberley’s story resonated with Kumon Instructors across North America,” explained Danielle Sabbagh, Kumon’s Communication and Event Specialist. “We saw a tremendous possibility to channel this collective energy into a meaningful, lasting impact. So, in 2022, we officially launched the annual Kumon Book Drive, focusing on getting books into the hands of those who need them most.”
The nationwide initiative serves as a lifeline for countless organizations dedicated to fostering literacy. “We work closely with Kumon instructors to identify local organizations directly serving families in need,” sabbagh said. “this includes children’s hospitals, schools, literacy tutoring programs, and library fundraising groups.
