Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stood tall, stopping 32 out of 34 shots faced, as his team secured a hard-fought victory against the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday.The win came after a 6-4 loss to the Seattle Kraken on Monday, showcasing the Sabres’ resilience and determination.
Elias Pettersson and Phillip Di Giuseppe,finding the back of the net for the canucks with Di Giuseppe scoring his frist goal of the season, provided a valiant effort. However, Thatcher Demko, the Canucks’ netminder, made 23 saves but ultimately couldn’t prevent the defeat.
The Canucks were without their defenseman Tyler Myers, who served the first game of a three-game suspension for cross-checking Edmonton Oilers‘ defenseman Evan Bouchard during their previous game. In a similar incident, Edmonton captain Connor McDavid also received the same penalty for striking Vancouver winger Conor Garland with his stick.
Mark Friedman stepped up in Myers’ absence, returning to the NHL from the Abbotsford Canucks in the American Hockey League. Paired with Canucks captain Quinn Hughes,Friedman registered 15:01 of ice time,contributing to the Canucks’ defense.
Pettersson’s goal marked his first in six games since recovering from an undisclosed injury.Simultaneously occurring, the Sabres were missing veteran winger Jason Zucker due to illness.
The pivotal moment arrived in the third period at the 13:33 mark. Rasmus Dahlin provided a deft pass to Dylan Peterka, who unleashed a powerful shot past Demko, securing the game-winning goal for the Sabres.
This victory for the Sabres halted Vancouver’s struggles, as the team has yet to secure consecutive wins since December 1st, posting a 7-9-7 record since then.

Archyde: Ukko-Pekka, you stood tall in goal, stopping 32 of 34 shots. What was your mindset going into this game, especially after the loss to Seattle the previous day?
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen: Well, we knew it was going to be a tough game against a skilled Canucks team. I just wanted to focus on my game,make the first save,and let the team handle the rest. Losing to Seattle was tough, but it’s part of hockey. We bounce back, and that’s what we did against Vancouver.
Archyde: You’ve been playing incredibly well lately.Do you feel like you’re reaching your peak performance now?
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen: I’m definitely feeling more cozy in the net. It’s been a process,adjusting to the NHL,but I think I’m finding my rhythm. There’s always room for advancement, though. I’ll keep working hard to get better.
Archyde: Rasmus Dahlin’s pass to Dylan Peterka for the game-winning goal was a thing of beauty. Did you have any idea that was coming?
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen: (Laughs) Not at all. I was just trying to focus on my own game. but when I saw Dahlin with the puck,I knew something good was going to happen. Peterka’s shot was unreal. It’s always great to see the guys score like that, especially when it’s the game winner.
Archyde: looking ahead, the Sabres face the Calgary Flames next. What do you think will be key to continuing this momentum?
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen: We just need to keep playing our game. Stick to our system, support each other, and never give up. If we do that, I have there’s no doubt whatsoever we can keep the momentum going. We’re a resilient team, and I’m proud to be a part of it.
