KU Leuven and the Reuzegom Tragedy: The Truth Behind the Cover-Up

“KU Leuven is responsible for the fact that the truth does not come to the surface,” he said.

Ousmane Dia, in a joint interview with Makemu Meunier, Sanda’s grandmother, and lawyer Sven Mary, said he was “deeply disappointed” by the court’s decision. “Sanda was my son, my only son. They took it away from me. And now the court has also slapped me. Sanda did not receive the respect he deserved”.

The victim’s father is also not satisfied with the reaction of KU Leuven and its rector Luc Sels. “When a student at your university dies, as rector you have to find out what happened, it seems to me. You hold those involved accountable for their actions, you intervene decisively. Luc Sels did not do that”.

The latter should have expelled the members of Reuzegom from his university, continued Mr. Dia. “He should have threatened to stop their studies. The boys who saw it all but were not responsible for Sanda’s death would have spoken out then. He did not file a civil action either, which would have allowed him to have access to all the information contained in the court file. He quietly let the boys do it. (…) KU Leuven is responsible for the fact that the truth was not revealed, even during the trial,” he added.

According to Sanda’s father, his son was singled out because of his color. “People will prove me wrong and refer to that other colored boy in the circle. But I say, as a father, what I feel deep in my heart: Reuzegom, an elitist student club, brought in someone with Sanda who did not correspond to his standing. His father had no garden, no driveway, no house of his own. Sanda was too small for them: “Not everyone can become a Giant”. And they wanted to prove it,” he concluded.
