Ksenia Sinitsyna: The 19-year-old Figure Skater Overcoming Injury to Lead at the Russian Grand Prix

19 year old Ksenia Sinitsyna – one of the oldest participants in the Russian Grand Prix this season. The figure skater is the leader at the stage in Samara, ahead of Eteri Tutberidze’s students Daria Sadkova and Maya Khromykh.

Preparation for the stage was not easy for Ksenia. The figure skater has been training fully for only a week and a half. Before that, she had to endure a broken foot, which doctors did not immediately notice. The girl spoke regarding the doctors’ mistake in an interview with journalists in Samara, among whom was Sport24 correspondent Konstantin Lesik.

“I feel normal now, the injury no longer bothers me. It was mentally difficult to go on the ice following an injury, to start once more the work that I had done over the summer. With new strength, with a new fighting mood – and here I am,” Ksyusha begins.

After this, the skater spoke regarding what she had to go through during preparation.

“At test skating sessionsThey thought it was just a bruise and would go away in two hours. But I went to the free program, it still hurt, I mightn’t step on my foot. I went for an x-ray the next day. They also told me that it was a bruise, I went to a traumatologist, and he also said that it was a bruise and in six days I might go on the ice. I came out, lutzes and flips were painful to do, and I skated a program with snipes, salchows and sheepskin coats. The pain did not go away, a few days later I took the photo once more. I went, and the radiologist said: “So you had a fracture, you know?“- the skater is surprised.

As the athlete notes, due to all the problems, preparation for the stage in Samara took only a few days.

“A repeated X-ray showed that the fracture had already begun to heal. I roll, jump, and my fracture heals… I stayed for another five days and went to the hospital to recover. I pumped up my foot and had procedures done. My leg began to pass, and I began to go out onto the ice slowly. I skated for a week without jumping at all, just spins. I rode in this mode for a week. Then I decided to jump and collected all the triples. I skated the free program with all the elements, and then I came – I mightn’t raise my arm, I mightn’t lift my leg, everything hurt (smiles).

Only a week and a half ago we started preparing hard – nothing hurt, nothing bothered us,” says Sinitsyna.

Journalists were shocked by this story. In response to their clarifying question regarding how it is even possible not to notice a fracture, Ksenia said that the photographs do not reach the patient.

“The traumatologist didn’t notice the fracture, yes. We don’t know why. The traumatologist didn’t notice a bit. It turns out that the radiologist now does not give x-rays to his hands and sends him to a traumatologist. And the traumatologist said that everything was fine, he didn’t see anything. And I went with a calm soul that everything was fine with me – I’d sit for four days and be back on the ice.”

After the short program, Sinitsyna is 0.8 points ahead of second place Daria Sadkova.
