KS sounds the alarm about the municipalities’ finances – asks the politicians to take action

– The financial situation in Kommune-Norge is worsening with each passing day. This is independent of how the municipalities got out of the income system, says the letter, according to NRK.

The letter has the heading: “Now it’s serious”.

– We had an executive board meeting on Friday, and there were reports from all over the country about how the situation is – both from large and small municipalities from the north, south, east and west, says chairman Gunn Marit Helgesen in KS to the state channel.

In addition to expensive time, increased interest costs, more refugees and more people on social assistance, falling tax revenues also affect the municipalities.

– It reinforces the already serious situation.

Municipal director Stig Tore Johnsen in Tromsø municipality says that they appear to be receiving historically low tax revenues. The municipality is moving towards a negative operating profit of NOK 229 million this year.

KS asks the politicians to take action and fully finance the tasks the municipality is required to do.

– There is too little money to finance what the citizens expect, and the services the municipality is required to provide by the Storting. The government and the Storting must take this to heart – immediately, KS writes in the letter.
