“We are not allowed to enter other people’s lives with our shoes on!” – says Henryka Krzywonos. The social activist, who for years ran a family children’s home with her husband, addressed the issue of adoption of children by same-sex couples. She also returned to her own experiences.
When she uttered the memorable words “This tram will not go any further” on August 15, 1980, she forever entered the history of Poland. In 2009, at the Women’s Congress, she received the title of Polish Woman of the Bicentennial. In private, Henryka Krzywonos is the founder of a foundation that helps families in need, and together with her husband, she ran a family children’s home for years, where she raised 12 children.
In her latest interview with Plejada, she spoke regarding the hardships of adoption. She also revealed what she thinks regarding same-sex couples raising children.
Financial problems
Henryka Krzywonos admitted that raising 12 children is a huge financial burden. Unfortunately, she might not count on sufficient support from the state and institutions.
“We paid for everything out of our own pockets. My husband and I often worked extra hours to earn money for the family. I will say that today I don’t regret it, because it’s also bad when you get used to getting something. We had 800 PLN for a child. The minister came to us, brought 10 chocolates, which she asked us to sign on her behalf. She looked at our house, looked at another family home and said that they would cut us 400 PLN. I remember it was before Christmas,” she said.
She still recalls the unpleasant words she heard from the official. “We didn’t know what to do, and at MOPS (Municipal Social Welfare Center — editor’s note) we were told: If you don’t have money, give your children back. What are you complaining regarding? They don’t give us money for our children either. It was a completely different approach,” she told the Plejada journalist.
Henryka Krzywonos on adoption by same-sex couples
Henryka Krzywonos also spoke regarding the issue of adoption of children by same-sex couples.
“If they are decent people, if they have at least a modicum of awareness that having a baby is not a game and they will move in the right direction, then why not? They can be better parents to these children than biological ones” – she said in an interview for Plejada.

“Who cares who lives with whom? As long as he gets enough sleep and his feet are clean.. We are not allowed to enter other people’s lives with our shoes on! If a child is to be raised by a same-sex couple and have a normal life, then I fully support that,” she stated clearly.
“I say this with full determination, if a child is to be raised by a same-sex couple and have a normal life, then I sign under that with both hands. I believe that everyone has the right to live with whom they want and how they want, because it’s their life. Every person – and the constitution says this – has the right to live the life they have created for themselves, as long as they do not harm others.”
