Kristjan Korsten: it would be fair if the municipal government did not sell the Virtsu school building before the elections

The coalition of the Lääneranta municipal council has not received a mandate from the voters either for the school reform, as it has been done now, or for the reform of cultural institutions, as it has been done now.

The Lääneranna electoral union, which overwhelmingly won the 2021 local government elections, achieved this result with, among other things, promises: “We are planning multifunctional buildings in Varbla, Koonga and Virtsu. We will continue to provide primary education in Kõmsi, Lõpe and Metsküla schools.” (source: front page of the election association’s website at lrvl.ee)

Virtsu is the second largest settlement in Lääneranna municipality and probably the first in terms of development potential. The development of Virts is facilitated by the location and active community. Until 2023, Virtsus was the best primary school in the municipality. During the school reform, it was changed to four classes.

Considering the development potential of Virtsu and the Ministry of Education and Research’s support for sixth-grade rural schools, such a course of events is unconscionable. There is no adequate reason why Virtsus cannot be a six-grade school. However, perhaps there is an inadequate reason for this.

For years, the belief has been circulating in the Lääneranna municipality that the fate of the Virtsu school building has long been decided and a nursing home will be built there, with which an influential member of the municipal council is said to be personally connected. We don’t know if this is true, maybe the future will tell. It is true, however, that many people in Lääneranna municipality think this way.

If the hypothesis is true, it probably explains why the municipal council made the Virtsu school four-grade, although this is incomprehensible considering the objective circumstances. The explanation is that four classes can fit in the Virtsu kindergarten building, but six classes cannot. If Virtsu’s school has four classes, Virtsu’s school building can be sold.
