In 2012, Ratih Kumala publish novel Kretek Girl regarding the home kretek craftsman industry and its ins and outs. Ten years later, Kretek Girl was transformed into a series that will soon be broadcast on the service Netflix in November.
Kretek Girl is not just any ordinary story. Books published by publishers Gramedia Pustaka Utama (GPU) was included in the top ten recipients of the Kusala Sastra Khatulistiwa award and was successfully printed 10 times.
To detikcom, Ratih Kumala said that Kretek Girl’s journey was completely unexpected.
“I myself feel strange, maybe it’s strange that the book’s journey has reached this moment, you might say that. (The journey) was standard, the reprints were still stable and then suddenly it boomed. Suddenly everyone was talking regarding Kretek Girl, until I was so shocked, and it’s on Netflix,” he said when met in the BSD City area, Tangerang, recently.
While joking, Ratih Kumala said she was not ready to become such a famous person. “I know people read Kretek Girl and always feel that I have my own group of readers and they are actually quite intense, sometimes DMing too (on Instagram), sometimes telling me ‘Ma’am, I’m reading this’,” said Ratih.
The announcement of the adaptation of Kretek Girl into a series was acknowledged Ratih Kumala making many young readers discuss it.

“Actually, that’s what makes me happy regarding all of that. The influence there is, which means that children might not think regarding what literature is. What is Indonesian literature like, then there is an interest in it,” he said.
But, continued the wife Eka Kurniawanhe felt that perhaps the novel Kretek Girl had gone in that direction.
“After thinking regarding it, maybe the path of a work can become known, and how a work can influence other people. There’s not just one path, right? There can be various (methods), adapted for the big screen or into a series,” Ratih said.
He also trusted Jeng Nyah (the main character in Kretek Girl) played by Dian Sastrowardoyo. Directors Kamila Andini and Ifa Isfansyah have certainly thought carefully regarding each actor in Kretek Girl.
“I also don’t have a problem if in the minds of every reader of Jeng Nyah it’s not Dian Sastro or what kind of criticism there is. I let all that go,” he concluded.
The Kretek Girl series will air on Netflix on November 2 2023.
