“The response to aggressive actions by unfriendly countries,” in the words of Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, targeted French agrifood giant Danone this weekend as well as Baltika breweries, the Russian subsidiary of Danish Carlsberg. It took the form of a “provisional seizure” of the assets whose management was placed under the supervision of the Russian federal agency of the participations, Rosimouchtchestvo. This measure took Danone and Carlsberg by surprise, both engaged in a process of selling their assets in Russia, advanced in the case of the second.

Selling was what Carlsberg, Danone, Fortum and Uniper had in common. Many Swiss companies have adopted another strategy since the start of the conflict with Ukraine: to stay while respecting European sanctions. A fundamental difference, with legal foundations, which has so far protected them from reprisals taken by the Kremlin in response to American-European sanctions.
