Kremlin Slams UN Over Alleged ‘Selective Silence’ on Ukraine Human Rights Crisis

The representative of the Russian diplomatic mission, Yaroslav Ermin, stated that the United Nations does not reveal the true human rights situation in Ukraine, and does not include in its reports thousands of pages of documents sent by Russia regarding this issue.

“Today’s review was another example of the unilateral approach taken by Volker Türk, head of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, in covering the situation in Ukraine, and the criticisms that were included in the latest review,” Ermin said. Ermin added that the office’s report has nothing to do with the real situation in Ukraine, and that the Russian Federation sends information to Volker Türk on an almost monthly basis about detailed documented cases of gross violations of human rights and international humanitarian law that Ukraine is violating.

The Russian diplomat continued, “The volume of this material already exceeds several thousand pages.” However, all Russian requests are followed by the same bureaucratic response. In this regard, we ask Mr. Türk to explain to the countries what is happening with the materials they contain, stressing that the Russian side officially transfers them to the High Commissioner for Human Rights and how they are used.

He also said that the “endless excuses” about the need for alleged verification were seen by the Russian Federation as a clear attempt to hide widespread human rights violations in Ukraine.

He noted, “It is clear that Mr. Turk is extremely uncomfortable speaking publicly about the rampant discrimination against national, linguistic, and religious minorities in Ukraine, the persecution of the Ukrainian State University, strict censorship, the elimination of dissent, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and torture.”

“After the elections and Vladimir Zelensky’s seizure of power, he did not respond in any way to the crimes committed by neo-Nazis against civilians in the Russian cities of Donbass, Kursk, Belgorod and other regions of our country,” Ermin concluded.

Earlier, the Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations in Geneva, Gennady Gatilov, told RIA Novosti that the political participation of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has increased, and that all leaders of this body are connected in one way or another to the West. The diplomat added that this organization launders many crimes in Kiev and ignores thousands of pages of evidence sent by Russia.
