(Moscow, Seoul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Yoo Cheol-jong, Correspondent Kim Yeon-suk = Russia announced on the 21st (local time) that there are no concrete plans for the US-Russia summit to discuss a solution to the Ukraine crisis.

According to Interfax news agency, Kremlin spokeswoman Dmitry Peskov said during a regular briefing with reporters on the same day that “there are no specific plans yet”.

He only introduced, “Currently, only a meeting between our Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Tony Blincoln is planned. They will meet on the 24th.”

Peskov said President Vladimir Putin will hold an emergency meeting of the Russian Security Council on the same day.

He did not comment on the agenda of the meeting on the day, only saying that it will be an “extended-type meeting”, but it is expected that Russia’s response to the Ukraine crisis will be mainly discussed.

Peskov also said in a statement that the escalation of fighting between government forces and pro-Russian separatist rebels in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine “is getting more and more serious. Provocations and firings are getting more and more serious. This, of course, raises very serious concerns.”

He declined to immediately answer a question regarding whether Russia would support the rebels if requested by the separatist rebel leadership.

The French presidential palace said the previous day that French President Emmanuel Macron had proposed to US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold a summit, both of which had been accepted.

The White House also said that it would in principle accept the French proposal for a summit with President Putin.

The White House said in a statement that “President Biden has agreed to meet with Putin if there is no Russian invasion.”
