A Darker Take on a Classic Villain

The upcoming “Kraven the Hunter,” promises to deliver a gritty and R-rated exploration of one of Marvel’s most formidable villains. Director J.C. Chandor insisted on staying true to the source material, even drawing inspiration from a major comic book storyline.

Embracing the Source Material

Speaking about his approach to the character, Chandor emphasized the importance of respecting the established canon. “The audience obviously takes the foundational elements of the canon here really seriously – and so did we,” he said.

He envisions a diverse stand-alone film that can be enjoyed by fans familiar with the character while also being accessible to newcomers. “I think we want to always be servicing the movie and making a great movie that can stand on its own. And you don’t have to come into this really knowing everything. But if you do, I also wanted to take that really seriously.”

Devotion to the source material, however, also means embracing its darkness. “One of the fun things about signing up for one of these movies is you’re getting to try to take these, you know, generations of canon and actually take the best of it for your story and do something fascinating with it. So in our version of Kraven, I hope people will see that we’ve gone all the way back to the origin,” Chandor revealed. “I don’t want to go too into much of the details with some of the other characters in it, but the Rhino, Calypso, certainly Chameleon – we took that same balance where even though we’ve maybe tweaked some things and updated them, it’s the spirit from those original books,” he concluded concerning the adaptation’s faithfulness.

A Glimpse of ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’

There’s a touch of uneasiness shrouding the film’s marketing, a subtle sense of desperation woven into the marketing campaign. From Director Chandor’s explicit call for fans to give the movie a chance to the revealing 8-minute sneak peek, the director is becoming openly intimatiing future plans involving Spider-Man.

He isn’t shy about intentions for sequels. He said “Certainly for Aaron [Taylor-Johnson] and I, ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’ was our North Star, basically. So the character that we created, you know, if everyone comes out and supports the film and we get to keep telling this story, that is where we were heading. When people get a chance to see the whole film, I think they’ll see that we were very serious about what we were trying to do.”

“Kraven the Hunter” captures the gritty origin story of one Marvel’s most beloved
villain, set to arrive in theaters December 13.
