The Emmaus tradition comes from the Middle Ages, when a religious procession from Krakow to the village of Zwierzyniec took place on Easter Monday. The custom of going to churches outside the city was very widespread in Europe, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 19th century, all inhabitants of Krakow attended this “folk festival”: the poorest and the richest. (PAP)
