Krafton sets foot in Canada with former Ubisoft developers

Krafton Montreal Studio is Krafton’s new Canadian AAA game studio.

A figure in the video game industry, Patrik Méthé was recruited by the publisher of PUBG to direct Crafton Montreal Studio and overseeing development of the video game adaptation of The Bird That Drinks Tears, a fantasy novel series created and written by author Yeong-do Lee.

Kim Chang-han, CEO of Krafton, said:

We are thrilled to open our first Canadian AAA studio in Montreal, one of the best cities in the world for video game production. The number of local creative and specialist talents is impressive and we hope many will join our team. Krafton Montreal Studio will be our third studio in North America and we have found in Patrik Méthé a perfect leader, with great experience, to take franchises to new heights.

An ambitious recruitment for Krafton Montreal Studio

While Krafton Montreal Studio’s goal is to hire 150 people over the next three years, Krafton’s Canadian AAA game studio already has some big names in the industry, such as producer Benoit Frappier, who has worked on Rainbow Six, Far Cry and Watch Dogs, project manager Kate Lee, who helped launch PUBG on console, CTO Martin Paradis, who worked on Gotham Knights and several Assassin’s Creed and Prince titles of Persia, game director Frédéric Duroc, who has worked on Far Cry, Rainbow Six, Prince of Persia and Peter Jackson’s King Kong The Official Game of the Movie, and art director Kwangjae Son, who has over 20 years of experience in concept art and art direction.

The Bird That Drinks Tears, Krafton Montreal Studio’s first project

The Bird That Drinks Tears has been beloved by Korean readers for 20 years for its complex worldview and nuanced characters. The narrative is characterized by its unique environments and characters that exceptionally encompass East and West. The saga tells the story of four races, the Humans, the Leckorn, the Dokkaebis and the Nagas, which begins with the first encounters between these races.

Patrik Méthé, head of Krafton Montreal Studio, adds:

Our team is currently made up of experienced talents who have a proven track record of successful games. We share a common goal, which is to provide the best adaptation of the novel and to provide an exceptional experience for players. As a medieval fantasy fan since my teenage years, I’m thrilled to bring one of his masterpieces to life in an ambitious and unforgettable game. We mightn’t be happier to be part of the Krafton family.
