The Indonesian General Election COMMISSION (KPU) will hold simultaneous regional head elections (Pilkada) in 2024 only in 37 provinces out of 38 provinces in Indonesia. Chairman of the Indonesian KPU, Hasyim Asy’ari, said that simultaneous regional elections were only held in 37 provinces because the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) did not hold direct regional elections.

“For gubernatorial elections (held) in 37 provinces, DIY does not go through direct regional elections,” explained Hasyim.

Hasyim said that the 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada voting will be held on Wednesday, November 27 2024.

“The KPU is holding the launch of the 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada, which is planned for voting to be held later on November 27 2024,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, Yogyakarta has special regulations that only a few other regions in Indonesia have. This is stated in Law Number 13 of 2012 concerning Specialties of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY).

In the law, there are regulations regarding the appointment of the governor and deputy governor of DIY who are not elected through a general election, but through an inauguration process.
