The General Election COMMISSION (KPU) will carry out a cross check regarding areas prone to conflict in the 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada which was released by the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) on Monday (26/8). KPU member August Mellaz said that the election vulnerability index released by Bawaslu was a separate data map.

“Indeed, we will definitely check with our regions because election organizers in the context of regional elections can have different dynamics,” said Mellaz when met by ANTARA at the KPU office, Jakarta, as reported by Antara, Saturday (12/10).

According to him, areas considered vulnerable by Bawaslu could, based on the KPU’s perspective, be found in other areas. Mellaz also explained that the potential for being vulnerable or not vulnerable really depends on normal dynamics.

He said that for Papua itself there are several vulnerable points. “As for the others, the level of competition at field level will determine it. However, so far it hasn’t,” he said.

Previously, Bawaslu identified five provinces with a high level of vulnerability in the 2024 Regional Head Election (Pilkada).

The five provinces are East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), East Kalimantan (Kaltim), East Java (Jatim), South Sulawesi (Sulsel), and Central Sulawesi (Central Sulawesi).

Bawaslu Chairman Rahmat Bagja said that these provinces faced challenges at various stages of the regional elections, including nominations, campaigns and vote counting.

“There are five provinces with the highest vulnerability at the nomination, campaign and counting stages,” added Bawaslu Chair Rahmat Bagja after launching the 2024 Pilkada vulnerability mapping in Jakarta, Monday (26/8).

Apart from that, there are 28 provinces with a medium level of vulnerability and four provinces with a low level of vulnerability.

Bawaslu also mapped the vulnerability at the district/city level with the results showing that there were 84 districts/cities that fell into the high vulnerability level category. For example, Malang Regency, Fakfak, Pinrang, Bangkalang, Bulukumba, Baubau, East Manggarai, and Berau Regency.

To face challenges in these vulnerable areas, Bawaslu plans to coordinate with various stakeholders such as local governments and TNI/Polri security forces to carry out mitigation if security disturbances occur. (I-2)
