The Corruption Eradication COMMISSION (KPK) advised the government to stop providing social assistance for 2-3 months before voting for regional head elections (pilkada) this year.
“I really hope there is a regional regulation or whatever that prohibits the distribution of social assistance 2 months or 3 months before the regional elections,” said KPK Deputy Chairman Alexander Marwata at the KPK Juang Building, South Jakarta, Wednesday (20/3).
Responding to this, the Program Manager of the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem), Fadli Ramadhanil, said that if it was related to the context of the 2024 Election, it would definitely be too late.
“Because the social assistance frenzy occurs at the campaign stage or around the campaign period,” said Fadli to Media Indonesia, Thursday (21/3).
“I think this needs to be thought regarding once more in preparation for the 2024 regional elections because that is the closest election now,” he explained.
Previously, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) assessed that the distribution of social assistance (bansos) was a problem in the selection of officials. People tend to choose candidates who give them goods or money. Therefore, the Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK) appealed to stop the distribution of social assistance two months or three months before the regional elections.
Responding to this, the spokesperson for the National Winning Team (TPN) Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD (Ganjar-Mahfud) Chico Hakim assessed that stopping the social assistance recommended by the KPK was not appropriate because many people still depend on social assistance from the government. “Especially for people who are classified as extreme poverty,” said Chico to Media Indonesia, Wednesday (20/3).
However, Chico regretted the KPK’s attitude which only reacted when the presidential election stages had finished. (Z-2)
