Doctors, nurses and police in Kozani fought once morest time in order to save the life of a 16-year-old who had consumed car antifreeze.
The minor, under unspecified circumstances, consumed the liquid and was taken to Mamatsio Hospital in Kozani in a critical condition, where the doctors decided that an antidote should be given. Thus, a large operation was immediately set up to transport the antidote, with the participation of police officers from Athens and Thessaloniki.
“Almost stalled”
The 16-year-old’s mother spoke to Alpha’s main news bulletin. “I say it, I emphasize it and that’s what I’m shouting, it’s good that the people in Kozani were here and saved our child. At this moment we would cry, because our child, as we were told, was little before the interruption. If the ICU of Kozani did not exist, our child would not have reached Thessaloniki or Ioannina”.
The teenager was admitted to the hospital’s ICU on Holy Wednesday. “His condition was not compatible with life it was a matter of seconds to stop and if it was stopped he would not go back. We remained at the site without being on duty and at night we did not leave the child to get well”, explained the ICU director of the Kozani hospital, Konstantinos Stokkos.
“Because the antidote is expensive, there are not many doses and we took almost all the doses from all over Greece,” he said.
“Let’s also thank the police, who twice set up a bridge of life in order to find and immediately transport the antidotes to the Kozani hospital,” says the mother of the teenager.
He is being treated at the Hippocrates ICU
The next day, the 16-year-old was transferred to the Hippocrates Hospital of Thessaloniki, where he is hospitalized in a stable condition in the ICU.
“I saw this child as if I saw my own son. I never once thought regarding not giving my best, like all my colleagues.”
The family of the 16-year-old, as well as the doctors, are appealing for the reinforcement of the intensive care unit of the Kozani hospital.
“We need to staff the ICUs, there are already excellent staff, but obviously not enough,” says the 16-year-old’s mother.
