Kottayam Pallikudam, which demolished the education system Kerala | Deshabhimani

Kottayam
Mary Roy gave birth to “Pallikkuta” in Kottayam from the feeling that the current education system is not enough for the holistic development of Indian students. The school started on a small scale by renting the hall of the Rotary Club and grew into “Pallikkuta” due to her extraordinary vision. After realizing the deficiency in his son’s learning style, he came to the idea of school with a new education system. His seven-year-old son was happy at a British school called Lushington in Ooty, drawing and so on without much homework. But Mary realized that her son thought he was British and began to see the Indian students as foreigners. He was later admitted to Mary Breaux High School. After school on the first day, he came home with 16 notebooks and 10 text books in a bag. He dropped it on the floor and started crying. It was then that Mary first realized the inadequacy of education in India.

Mary discovered the small-class teaching method at Lushington. Self-study was important there. And to top it all off, there are many extracurricular activities. Mary saw firsthand the confidence of the students at Lushington. Indian students, on the other hand, study like bookworms with the burden of books. That day, Mary decided to create a new model by starting her own school.

Mary Roy started Corpus Christi School in Kottayam in 1967 with seven students. In 1972, with the help of his parents, he bought five acres of land in Kalathipadi, Kottayam. Mary was lucky to have Larry Becker to build the school. He built a beautiful school at a low cost. The first batch of ICSE students emerged victorious in 1979. In later years the school grew with new buildings and facilities. The school has a syllabus that gives importance to sports and nature studies. In 1999, the name of Corpus Christi was changed to “Pallikkootam”. Malayalam was made the medium of study till the second standard. Mary Roy, who was the principal, retired in 2011. Even following her retirement, she continued to be the patron and mentor of the school.
