The Marionette Exhibition with works by Patrinos Kostas Salpistis opens its doors today Tuesday (20:00) at the Polyhedros.
The exhibition will present, for the first time, 35 puppets as well as a puppet theater, all made of wood. In addition to the works, the public will have the opportunity to see up close the artist’s workbench, with the materials and tools of his work. Ballerinas, soldiers, elves, animals and fairy-tale figures will be hanging from threads, sitting on benches or on the floor, transporting the little ones to dream worlds and waking up the big memories from the years of innocence.
As Kostas Salpistis noted, speaking to “Peloponnisos”.“following a period of creating various artistic works, I started making puppets out of wood. My source of inspiration was fairy tales, of course, but I have also made a large figure of ’21, Kolokotronis». The creator’s work is amazingly detailed, which, as he explained, requires 4-5 days in easy cases, two to two and a half weeks in difficult cases. And that’s why the process is not at all simple. «I start from the design, but as I carve the puppet, I can sense that it is asking me for improvements” explained. “You take a piece of wood and give it life, you talk to it and it talks to you, that’s why the time of parting is difficult.”
What is his dream? “To initially make puppets, inspired by figures from the artistic scene of Patras, later by other personalities of the country, and to set up a Puppet Museum, ideally in Germanou or Markato, which would also include a theater where performances are given. People should come to Patras to see something different.”
The Exhibition is organized within the framework of the Storytelling Festival “The Fairy Tales of Neromana” and will last until the beginning of August. During it, there will be guided tours, educational workshops, a puppet show, in Polyhedros and in places where stories will be told, such as in Krini and Kastritsi.
