President of the Seniors’ Association calls for the abolition of pension contributions for work in retirement and warns not to play old people off once morest young people in the discourse.

Vienna (OTS) In view of the current discussion regarding the potential of pensioners to combat the acute shortage of skilled workers in nursing, Seniorenbund President Ingrid Korosec underscores her appeal, which she made in today’s Ö1-Mittagsjournal. “We have a shortage of staff, the lack of care is acute. That’s why we have to use all possible countermeasures. Seniors are a valuable pool of experts who can also be quickly available. This applies to all areas, but also especially to care!”

Korosec for abolition of pension contributions for work in retirement

There are countless retirees who are still physically fit and want to continue working (to a small extent) in retirement. They should be given every opportunity to do so, demands Korosec. “This also means making work in retirement more financially attractive, for example through the Abolition of pension contributions for work in retirement or other tax breaks!”

Due to the high pension contributions of up to 22.8 percent following taxes, working pensioners currently have just over a third of their gross earnings. The contributions paid in turn hardly increase the pension. “If you want to and can work in retirement, it must be more worthwhile for you!”pleads Korosec.

Korosec: “Don’t play old once morest young!”

Korosec does not see any crowding-out effects on the labor market by making work in retirement more attractive. “A retired professional cannot block a job for which younger people are not qualified. In addition, the transfer of knowledge is promoted when younger employees have experienced colleagues at their side for a few days a month.”she argues.

“Instead of playing old once morest young, we must jointly exhaust all possibilities to counteract the acute shortage of skilled workers. Especially in nursing, blocking attitudes are misguided and cost us valuable time!”Korosec warns in conclusion.
