South Korea’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations announced on the 2nd (local time) that it would directly request the UN Security Council to convene a Security Council meeting regarding North Korea’s provocations. Korea will serve as a member of the Security Council this year and next year. Since the Security Council members have the authority to speak, vote, and submit resolutions at Security Council meetings, they will actively utilize this to resolve the North Korean issue.
Ambassador to the United Nations Hwang Joon-guk held an informal consultation with Security Council members on this day and discussed the schedule and agenda for the January meeting. Ambassador Hwang met with reporters following the consultation and said, “There are no North Korea-related issues on the January Security Council agenda, but South Korea has the authority to request a Security Council meeting if necessary, and we requested other members to cooperate.” It is reported that the agreement was obtained from a majority of countries including the United States, Japan, and France. However, permanent members China and Russia, who have represented North Korea’s position so far, are said to have differed in their opinions to the effect that ‘North Korea’s provocations do not pose a real threat.’
Korea, along with Algeria, Guyana, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia, began its term as an elected non-permanent member of the Security Council for 2024-2025 on the 1st. This is the third time that Korea has become a member of the UN Security Council, following 1996-1997 and 2013-2014.
