The $300 million contribution to the GCF announced by President Yoon will be made during the second financial replenishment period from 2024 to 2027. GCF was launched in 2013 with a secretariat in Songdo, Incheon, and Korea has contributed a total of $300 million twice during the first replenishment period. With President Yoon’s announcement today, Korea will contribute the same amount as the existing amount at once. President Yoon also emphasized, “We look forward to active contributions from the G20 level to the GCF.”
President Yoon then announced that he would lead international cooperation for the transition to clean energy, saying, “I will lead the transition to clean energy, focusing on nuclear power generation and hydrogen energy.” President Yoon said, “The Republic of Korea, which possesses the world’s highest level of nuclear power plant technology, is also accelerating the development of small modular nuclear power plants (SMRs), the next-generation nuclear power plant.” He added, “We are actively cooperating with countries that want to strengthen energy security while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.” “I hope so,” he said.
