Major foreign media reported on the damage and recovery from heavy rains in Korea, and analyzed that the possibility of extreme weather changes in East Asia has increased due to the climate crisis.

The New York Times of the United States, covering the damage situation including victims of flooding in the Osong underground roadway in Chungcheongbuk-do, reported that in Korea, the damage was one following another due to the monsoon rain that swept the country in recent days.

The New York Times reported that ″Korea is vulnerable to landslides due to frequent rains in summer and a lot of mountainous terrain″ and ″but this time the number of casualties reported so far is higher than in previous years.″

Bloomberg News also reported on the current status of heavy rain damage in Korea, saying, “Korea suffers from heavy rain every summer, and dozens of people die and property damage is caused by natural disasters every year.”

Archyde.com pointed out that “the disaster occurred despite the South Korean government’s pledge to step up preparedness following Seoul was hit by the heaviest rainfall in 115 years last year.”

Foreign media also reported experts’ analysis that this damage was the effect of climate change.

The New York Times reported that ″Rain tends to pour violently rather than slowly over a long period of time due to the effects of global warming″ and that ″It has become more difficult to prepare for floods.″

The US CNN broadcast also reported on the news of heavy rain damage in Korea, saying, “Scientists have warned that the frequency and intensity of heavy rains have increased across East Asia as the human-caused climate crisis has increased the possibility of extreme weather events.”
