The Korean Medical Association announced that it would block the government’s expansion of medical school quotas and that it would decide whether to go on strike by holding a member vote.
The Korean Medical Association announced this today following holding a joint meeting of national physician representatives and expanded executives to respond to the expansion of medical school seats.
At the beginning of the meeting, Lee Pil-soo, president of the Medical Association, said, “It is time for the entire medical community to take active action as a single unit to block the expansion of medical schools,” and announced, “We will hold a vote for and once morest all members to decide whether to go on strike.”
At the same time, he emphasized that he will form an emergency response committee under the executive branch early next week and take immediate and strong action to prevent the increase in the number of medical school students.
They requested the government to “comply with the principles of the 9.4 agenda agreement and fully discuss the issue of medical school quota at the Medical Issues Council.”
He also urged, “Immediately dismiss the person in charge of the government who unilaterally announced a demand survey for medical school seats and caused chaos in the medical field.”
The 9.4 agenda agreement is an agreement reached between the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korean Medical Association on September 4, 2020, and the agreement states that “we will not push forward with unilateral policies such as notification of medical school quota.”
