I tried it! A sweet meal made with Mansam – Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province
Eulsu-gol is said to be so rugged that even bears can get lost. Mr. Hwang Seong-ryong set out to find the treasure found in these deep and rugged mountains. The treasure that was finally found following climbing a steeper hill due to the snow that had accumulated overnight and digging through the frozen ground was ‘Mansam’.
Mansam is a root plant that grows naturally in rugged mountainous areas, and its appearance is similar to deodeok or ginseng. This mansam stores a lot of nutrients in its roots to survive the winter, which is why its sweet taste becomes stronger in the cold winter. In this region, mansam was a valuable food ingredient to the people of Eulsu-gol, so much so that they always cooked boiled rice with mansam in it for mothers who gave birth.
There is one more special ingredient for those born and raised here in Eulsugol. Corn is said to satisfy the hunger of the hungry. He said he ate so much since he was young that he got sick of it for a while, but following a long time, he reminisced regarding those days by making corn jelly by mixing corn ground in a mill with water.
They say there is something that gets sweeter in the cold, and that is spinach! Winter spinach’s sweetness doubles as it freezes and thaws repeatedly in the field. The people of Eulsugol rolled up their sleeves to make special dishes with sweeter ingredients in the winter.
From Deodeok, which resembles Mansam, and Mansam Spinach Sanjeok, made by combining spinach with bellflower root, to Spinach Dumplings, which everyone gathers to make and eat in the winter, and Mansambaeksuk, which is said to be the best health food for pregnant women. The people of Eulsugol say that gathering together and growing older is the sweetness of life. Sweet Yangmiri has arrived – Gangneung City, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province
At Jumunjin Port, there are ships setting sail despite the cold weather and rough waves. They say it’s to catch lamb in season. Even if the weather is rough, we go to the sea every day because it is a precious gift that will take care of the whole year. In particular, Yangmiri, which mainly visits the East Sea during the winter spawning season, is also a valuable guest that cannot be caught in the net if you miss the timing.
Unlike other fish, snailfish mainly live on the sandy bottom of the sea. They say that when the weather gets cold, they come up to the sand, and at this time, nets are set to catch them. There is something that must be used to check the location where sheeptails live. The camera! Throw a camera into the water and find out exactly where Yangmiri is. In the past, when I used only a fish finder to catch fishtail, the net would sometimes get caught on rocks and tear, but now, thanks to the camera, I can relieve that worry and catch more fish. Captain Lee Jeong-su says that when he sees sheep full of fish coming up from his net, he starts working, forgetting the cold. Today, we are sailing across the sea with the joy of a full ship.
Since sheeptail dies quickly when caught in a net, sailors load their boats full of sheepfish and quickly return to the port. When sheeptail is brought to the dockside with a net, workers’ hands are added to remove the sheepfish from the net. Most of them are veterans with more than 30 years of experience in Yangmi-ri work. With the money earned from the sheep harvested from the net, they live for the fun of teaching their children to study and providing pocket money to their grandchildren.
Captain Jeong-su Lee’s wife, Gu Min-jeong, prepares a table of warm lamb meat for them. Hot lamb kimchi soup with sliced lamb millet, semi-dried lamb millet stew that is said to be even more delicious following being dried in the sea breeze, and savory stir-fried lamb millet and aged kimchi made with old kimchi soaked last year! We look into the stories of the people of Jumunjin Port who are having a sweet time with Yang Mi-ri.

Nutty pine nuts, sweet life – Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province
Green pine trees stand out among the pure white snow. Pine nuts are useful food for animals in the winter, but the process of picking them is not easy. To pick pine nuts, you have to climb a tree and drop the pine nuts with a pole, which is a more dangerous task. Young-Rae Kim always wears a climbing gear when climbing a tree for safety reasons. Jang Seon-jae and his wife also helped out to pick up pine nuts that fell from the trees. Commonly known as fall pine nuts, winter pine nuts in particular boast a more nutty and sweet taste as they are naturally dried on trees.
It is said that this winter’s pine nuts also contain special memories of Jang Seon-jae’s wife, Ahn Yun-hee. Ms. Yoon-hee said that since she was young, it was her daily routine to pick pine nuts from the mountains and roast them in her furnace to eat them. She ate it with her mouth full of ash and said that the pine nuts might not have been so delicious. Yunhee’s younger siblings also mightn’t forget the taste, so they diligently went around picking up pine nuts even though their mother scolded them. The sisters roll up their sleeves once more and toast pine nuts together, just like the naughty kids they were when they were children.
It is said that winter bellflower root, which boasts a sweet taste along with winter pine nuts, cannot be left out at the dinner table. Yunhee makes bellflower jelly just like her mother used to make. The bellflower paste, which is completed by steaming and drying the bellflower root seven times, makes you feel the heart of her mother, who is full of sincerity. Here, a table of pine nuts and bellflowers is presented, capturing the sweetest moments, from beautifully shaped and fried sweet and sour bellflowers to bellflower pine seasoned seasoned with pine nut oil and sweetly made pine nut rice cakes.
Jang Seon-jae said that even in difficult times, it always felt like she was dreaming sweet dreams. Let’s hear the sweet life story of Jang Seon-jae’s family, who say that this moment when they are together is the sweetest, in episode 639 of ‘Korean Table’.
