(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Euijin Lee = The Korea Football Association has decided to pardon 100 soccer players who are being disciplined for reasons such as being involved in match fixing.
The association held a board of directors meeting in the conference room of the Seoul World Cup Stadium on the followingnoon of the 28th and decided to pardon 100 former and incumbent players, coaches, and referees who were disciplined for various misconduct.
Of the 50 players who were expelled for participating in match-fixing in professional football in 2011, 48 were also included in the pardon.
Choi Seong-guk, Kwon Jip, Yeom Dong-gyun, etc. are known to be included in the pardon list. However, two people who were judged to be guilty were excluded.
It is the first time in 14 years since 2009 that the association pardoned a person subject to disciplinary action.
The association said, “We reflected the opinions of the frontlines who proposed an amnesty for the sake of harmony and a new start in the soccer world, congratulating ourselves on the achievement of reaching the World Cup finals 10 times in a row and advancing to the round of 16 in the World Cup in Qatar,” the association said.
“There is also the purpose of giving another chance to footballers who are judged to have self-reflected for a long time and sufficiently reflected on themselves,” he explained.
According to the Korea Football Association, expelled soccer players are subject to review if they are pardoned following 7 years from the date of disciplinary action, and those who have been subject to indefinite qualification or suspension for 5 years.
In addition, the association said that soccer players who received ‘organized discipline’ considered amnesty only when the majority of the period of disciplinary action had passed.
Those who committed sexual violence and sexual harassment were excluded from the pardon review.
The association said, “We are closely watching to ensure that the association’s basic position on match-fixing has changed due to this pardon. We will thoroughly prevent and supervise incidents such as match-fixing in all games so that they do not recur.”
