The Korea Communications Standards Commission decided to impose a fine in relation to the so-called “Biden-flying” report reported by MBC during President Yoon Seok-yeol’s visit to the United States in 2022.
Today, the National Security Commission imposed the highest level of fine on MBC, with only three passport-recommended people present, including Chairman Ryu Hee-rim, Hwang Seong-wook, and Lee Jeong-ok.
Commissioner Hwang Seong-wook raised the issue, saying, “By reporting the president’s profanity, it turned it into a diplomatic issue,” and Chairman Ryu said, “Because MBC reported it preemptively, it may not have been easy for the President’s office to respond at the time, and it may have been difficult to respond to the diplomatic disaster.” “There is criticism that it was encouraged,” he claimed.
In response to this, MBC announced its intention to file a lawsuit, saying, “At the time, regarding 140 media outlets reported the same content and requested an explanation for the remarks, but the President’s Office did not provide a statement until 16 hours later.”
In a statement of opinion, YTN expressed an opinion to the effect that the committee’s deliberation diminishes freedom of the press, and the committee decided to impose severe disciplinary action on the officials.
OBS, which modified or apologized for its broadcast content, decided to issue a ‘caution’, KBS, SBS, TV Chosun, and MBN decided to issue a ‘recommendation’, and Channel A decided to ‘offer an opinion’.
Previously, in the first trial, the court acknowledged President Yoon Seok-yeol’s profanity, but ruled that MBC’s report was false because the so-called “Biden-fly” remark was not clear.
