Korda wins Washington Open 32 years after father

Sebastian Korda said it was “probably the most special moment of his career” as he emulated his father and won the Washington Open.

The 24-year-old beat Flavio Coboli 4-6 6-2 6-0 on Sunday to win his second career title.

Sebastian’s father Peter won the tournament in 1992, making them the first father and son in ATP Tour history to win the same title.

Sebastian’s coach, Radek Stepanek, was coached by Peter and won the 2011 Washington Open.

Defeating Copoli means Korda will rise to a career-high world ranking of 18th.

Elsewhere, former world number two Paula Badosa beat Marie Bouzkova 6-1 4-6 6-4 to win her first title in more than two years. championship title.

The 26-year-old dropped out of the top 100 in 2023 due to a stress fracture in her back.

But the Spaniard’s victory over Bouzkova means she will move back into the top 50 and earn a wild card to compete in Washington.
