As the opener “Where Or When” piano solo – and already on Monday evening Diana Krall had transformed the Wiener Konzerthaus into “her” living room, emotionally filled with very traditional jazz. Together with her three subtle musical companions, the Canadian pianist and singer weaved an artful cocoon once morest the currently particularly irritating outside world, concentrated and isolated on extremely subtle listening experiences.
So it was no surprise that very soon that evening an ingenious Latin version of Cole Porter’s “Night And Day” might be heard, finely “touched up” by drummer Karriem Riggins. Krall’s “The Night We Call It Day” followed a little later – her voice flickered between fragile-thin, smoky and powerful-dark. And the compelling thought arose that there was only one way to make this song even better live: as a duet with Tom Waits.
Also fantastic was the constant change between the 58-year-old Canadian’s own compositions and numerous jazz standards, always stylishly accompanied by guitarist Anthony Wilson and Robert Hurst on double bass. For example, Diana Krall followed “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” with the classic “LOVE (Love Was Made For Me And You)”, a Bert Kaempfert composition by the way.
And there were plenty of other very fine cover versions, such as “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” by Cole Porter, “Quiet Nights” by Bossanova king Antonio Carlos Jobim and – as the start of the encore set – “‘S Wonderful” by George and Ira Gershwin. That can be the conclusion of this evening – following a proverbial art break in Vienna, Diana Krall’s second performance in the Vienna Konzerthaus will follow on Wednesday (May 17th) – following the audience’s cheering on the first evening there was exactly one (!) ticket for it…
