Vincent Kompany would have liked a reunion. Between him and Zirkzee, but also between Zirkzee and Bayern Munich. The ex-Anderlecht player opted for a transfer to Man United and he has not regretted it yet.
The Dutchman has of course only just started his time at Old Trafford, but he immediately became the match winner there. It was thanks to him that Manchester United were able to keep the three points at home against Fulham in the Premier League opener. Zirkzee is therefore immediately worth gold to his coach.
Erik ten Hag says that the newcomer will be important in several ways. “Yes, he is also involved in the build-up, but scoring is important for a striker. He had to be where he was to finish it off. He has more qualities than that, so he has to find the right balance,” is Ten Hag’s conclusion.
Zirkzee must divide tasks
So there has to be a good balance between working for the team and being in the box. “We’re going to work with him, but that’s one of the things I’ve discussed with him. That he has to come into the box to finish chances, but of course we also want to build up through him. We signed him for that quality.”
Expectations are therefore high for Zirkzee. “He has great qualities to provide that build-up and we also have midfielders around him who can set up the combinations. So that we can take control of that part of the game.” The future will show whether she will also succeed in the red part of Manchester.
