Kolkata: Kolkata clubs will clash in the final of Durand Cup football. East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giants will meet in the final on Sunday from 4 PM.
In the second semi-final held yesterday, Mohun Bagan F.C. Beat Goa 2-1. Goa scored the first goal in the 23rd minute through Noah Sadau. Jason Cummings scored for Bagan in the last seconds of the first half.
Armando Sadiu scored Bagan’s winning goal in the 61st minute. East Bengal defeated North East United in penalty shootout (3-2) in the final.
When the two teams clashed in the group stage, East Bengal won 1-0. The second semi started with the progress of Goa. In the 7th minute, Sadoi entered the box and fired a shot over the post. Sadoi himself put Goa ahead in the 23rd minute.
The player who advanced from the center of the field caught Hugo Bomas’s miss pass and took a shot outside the box to shake the net. Bagan pulled back in the 41st minute through Cummings’ penalty.
The foul that led to the penalty became controversial. Ashiq Kuruniyan was brought down by Jacob on the line of the penalty box and the referee initially called a free kick. The line referee intervened and awarded a penalty. The Goa players protested but the referee stood his ground. The first half was evenly split. Vijaya scored the winning goal in the 61st minute. Sandesh Jinkan made a mistake in clearing the pass from the back row. Sadiu got the ball on his feet and without wasting time hit the net with a long range shot.
In the 69th minute, Roland Borges’ shot from a corner went over the post. Bagan’s lead was maintained by Vishal Keith in the last minute. Jay Gupta headed Paulo Retre’s free-kick but Keith made a full-length diving save. Goa’s finals hopes ended when the Bagan defense held firm in the final seconds.
