Red Bull Salzburg kept their pursuers Sturm Graz at a distance in the Bundesliga championship group. The league leaders won the home game against Rapid Vienna 2-1 (1-0) on Sunday and are on their way to their tenth championship title in a row with a three-point lead in the last four rounds. Thanks to two goals from Sekou Koita (18′, 62′), the defending champions got three points at the Red Bull Arena after the last three draws at home.

Rapid made the final phase exciting. After Salzburg’s third unintentional handball in their own penalty area was punished, Guido Burgstaller reduced the deficit to 1:2 with a penalty (70′). In the course of the discussions, Nicolas Capaldo was also excluded with yellow-red. Outnumbered, Salzburg brought victory over time.

Rapid showed a strong performance in Salzburg in the early stages. A week after the lost cup final, the Barisic team presented themselves as strong duels, so they initially had the midfield under control and were also the more dangerous team. An unintentional hand ball by Oumar Solet (3rd) was not penalized, shots by Burgstaller (7th) and Patrick Greil (10th) were blocked or deflected.

Contrary to the course of the game, Salzburg took the lead with Koita’s first shot on goal. In the 23rd minute, Matthias Jaissle’s team was doubly lucky that Jonas Auer’s shot went off the post and after another handball by Nicolas Seiwald, after a video check by referee Manfred Schüttengruber, the penalty whistle didn’t go off.

After half an hour, Salzburg also became more dangerous. Seiwald hit the bar (31′), Dijon Kameri missed (40′), Michael Sollbauer almost scored an own goal (43′) and Capaldo headed the ball into the arms of goalkeeper Niklas Hedl from close range in injury time.

After the break, the locals took control and increased to 2:0. Koita scored after a wonderful pass from Kameri. The game seemed over, but Rapid came back. The ball fell on Benjamin Sesko’s arm, the third VAR check brought the penalty, which Burgstaller safely converted to his 18th goal of the season. But despite being outnumbered, the Hütteldorfers were no longer able to equalize.

Salzburg have been undefeated against Rapid in the Red Bull Arena since August 2015 and have been unbeaten in a total of 40 home games. In the remaining four games, Rapid is fighting for fourth place, which entitles them to participate in the Conference League qualification.
