Kocher invites you to a round table in Kika/Leiner-Causa

In connection with the ailing furniture chain Kika/Leiner and the imminent dismissal of up to 2,000 employees, Economics Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) is inviting people to a round table next Friday. Representatives of the social partners, the AMS and the Insolvency Remuneration Fund (IEF) will discuss how to proceed. Those affected should be offered a perspective as quickly as possible, it said.

The aim is to mediate as quickly as possible. The currently high number of vacancies might be helpful. According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, around 117,000 vacancies were reported to the AMS at the end of May, almost a fifth of them (around 17 percent) in retail. The main actor for the rapid placement is the AMS, which is already in close contact with the company. The IEF, which also takes part in the round table, is intended to secure employees’ open claims for remuneration.

Explicitly one wants to start with the placement already during the current period of notice in order to ensure that affected employees can, at best, enter into a new employment relationship immediately following the end of the period of notice. “We will do everything in close coordination with the AMS, the IEF and the social partners so that employees can quickly find a new job in the current labor market situation with many vacancies,” says Kocher: “That is our most important task now.” The company does not want to be relieved of its responsibility either.

The restructuring process for the struggling furniture chain was opened last Tuesday at the regional court in St. Pölten. 23 of the 40 locations across Austria are to be closed, which might result in up to 2,000 employees losing their jobs.
