Business registrations increased by 7.9 percent compared to the previous year
Vienna (OTS/BMAW) – A total of 93,561 businesses were registered in 2023. Compared to 2022, this is an increase of 7.9 percent. What is particularly noteworthy is the comparison with recent years: more businesses were registered in 2023 than in the last 5 years.
“Despite the current economically challenging environment, 93,561 businesses were registered in 2023. This is a significant increase compared to the previous year, when the number of newly registered businesses was 86,600. This increase shows that, despite all the challenges we face, the Austrian business location has a very robust foundation and, fortunately, many are taking the first step into self-employment by registering a business,” said Labor and Economics Minister Martin Kocher.
The comparison to previous years also paints a very positive picture for the business year 2023: “The business registrations in 2023 exceed those of the past five years, in some cases even significantly,” Kocher further emphasizes. (2021: 89,283 business registrations, 2020: 86,109 business registrations, 2019: 87,641 business registrations, 2018: 85,263 business registrations)
In a comparison of federal states, the most business registrations were in Vienna; 20,003 businesses were founded here last year. There is also a positive trend in the other federal states; The numbers in the federal states of Lower Austria (17,700), Styria (13,752) and Upper Austria (13,539) have also clearly broken the mark of more than 10,000 new registrations.
The figures for business registration in the BMAW’s GISA service, in which business registrations can be carried out online according to central standards, are also developing well. The number of online business registrations also increased in 2023 compared to the previous year at over 81,565 (in 2022 there were around 76,000 online business registrations). That is more than 87 percent of all business registrations. “The GISA service, which experienced an upswing due to the pandemic-related conditions, has always been positively received since then. More than four out of five applications are made digitally. The registration numbers, which increased significantly once more in 2023, show the great popularity of the use of the digital ‘Trade Information System Austria (GISA)’. By simply taking advantage of the offer digitally, founders and companies save a lot of time, effort and costs when registering businesses, relocating, opening businesses and placing orders for management,” said the Minister of Labor and Economic Affairs.
About the Austrian Trade Information System (GISA)
GISA is a European pioneering project in the area of commercial and economic administration. This makes Austria the first European country in which business registrations and other procedures in the commercial sector can be carried out electronically online across the country according to central standards. GISA is an IT cooperation project between the federal government, states and statutory cities. GISA contains the most important company-related data for all commercial companies established in Austria. Anyone interested can quickly and easily obtain information in GISA, in particular regarding the name or company, the location and the wording of the trade license of a commercial company. GISA is currently the only authentic source of information for the data of commercial sole proprietorships that are not registered in the commercial register. Further information at
