Former NBA player Joe ‘Jellybean’ Bryant, father of Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant, has died at age 69.

The coach of the La Salle University basketball team in Philadelphia, Fran Dunphy, reported that Joe Bryant recently suffered a massive stroke.

The La Salle University basketball team confirmed the death of the former basketball player.

This was announced in a post by the “X” account on Twitter: “We are saddened to announce the passing of the great La Salle basketball player, Joe Bryant.”

“Joe played for the Explorers from 1973 to 1975 and was a member of our coaching staff from 1993 to 1996. He was a beloved member of the Explorer family and will be deeply missed.”

It has been more than four years since his son Kobe and granddaughter Gigi, along with seven others, lost their lives in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020 in the town of Calabasas, California.

He credited his father for teaching him “from a young age how to play the game, how to see the game, how to prepare and how to execute the game.”

Joe Bryant played and coached professionally in the United States at the international level following shining at La Salle.

After playing a decade in France and Italy, Bryant began coaching in 1992. He was the head coach of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks for three seasons, also coaching in various roles at both the professional and collegiate levels in the U.S., Japan and Thailand.
