“We will not let the commuters be branded as climate sinners.”
St. Polten (OTS) – The demands of the Greens for a general speed limit of 100 km/h on motorways for cars with combustion engines is not just “another excessive attack on the freedom of drivers, but is also exposed by numerous studies as senseless car driver patronage, the effects of which on climate protection are negligible.”
There is already a speed limit of at least 100 km/h on one third of the entire motorway network in Austria. It is therefore regarding the remaining two thirds of the ASFINAG route network, which the Greens are to provide with an additional limit. According to ÖAMTC calculations, this measure would only reduce the CO2 emissions of the entire transport sector by one to three percent. A connection between road safety and a reduced speed limit on motorways cannot be proven: The death rate on the motorways in the Netherlands is around 40 percent higher than in Austria, although there is a 100 km/h speed limit.
However, the travel time increases considerably. For commuters who cover a distance of 30 kilometers on the motorway every day, calculated over a working year, this results in a loss of time of 34 hours.
“Our commuters would almost spend an extra working week on the autobahn if the speed limit was lowered. This robs motorists of a lot of time and nerves for purely ideological reasons, which they might use more sensibly and productively in the interest of climate protection. Motorists can rely on the People’s Party of Lower Austria: We will know how to prevent this harassment. I don’t agree at all with the Green Party’s idea of branding commuters as climate sinners and making them feel guilty regarding driving to work. We won’t let this freedom be taken away from us in Lower Austria,” said club chairman Danninger.
