Knokke’s Shorts and Fridgebox Controversy: Police Monitoring the Situation

2023-08-26 10:42:00

The Facebook event encouraging people to come in shorts with a fridge box in Knokke has not caused a large influx of tourists so far. This is confirmed by Steve Desmet, police chief of the Damme/Knokke-Heist police area. Local police, however, are deploying additional troops to monitor the situation.

The movement started in response to an extract from the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. In this short interview, two women from Knokke complain regarding people walking around in shorts in the seaside resort. Tourists who go down to the beach with a fridgebox are also criticized. The video was the inspiration for the Facebook event. In total, the number of interested persons amounts to more than 40,000.

The police in the Damme/Knokke-Heist area have decided not to take any risks. Additional officers have been deployed to nip in the bud any problems with large groups of tourists with their fridgeboxes. “But those extra capabilities aren’t visible to the public,” Police Chief Steve Desmet said. Saturday morning, calm reigned in Knokke. “It’s still a long day, but for now it’s regarding looking for a fridgebox in a haystack,” he said.
