INDONESIAN tennis player Aldila Sutjiadi immediately shifted her focus to the United States (US) Open tournament following her progress at Wimbledon was halted.

“Thank you for the support during the Wimbledon tournament, especially those who encouraged me through my social media accounts and the Wimbledon account,” said Aldila, quoted from an official statement, Thursday (11/7) WIB.

“That support really ignited my spirit and I am determined to continue fighting to bring the name of Indonesia,” he added.

Aldila and her partner from the US, Jackson Withrow, were stopped in the last 16 of the 2024 Wimbledon mixed doubles following losing to the US/Japanese pair, Nathaniel Lammons/Ena Shibahara with a score of 6-7(5) 4-6.

In the first set, Aldila and Jackson were leading 5-1 in the tie break, but they failed to maintain their lead and eventually lost 6-7(5).

Then, in the second set, one of Aldila and Jackson’s serves was broken and they lost 4-6.

“We actually had the chance to take the first set, but we were unlucky and had to lose this set and even though we continued to press in the second set we were not able to avenge the defeat,” said Aldila.

Moments earlier, Aldila and Jackson had just finished the first round of the mixed doubles match which was postponed for a day due to rain following the second set ended.

They managed to defeat the Italian pair, Andrea Vavassori/Sara Errani, in the first round with a score of 6-3, 3-6, and 10-8.

“Shortly following the match, we immediately competed in the second round once morest Nathaniel Lammons/Ena Shibahara, who we eventually lost to,” he added.

Aldila said that her journey to Wimbledon was quite difficult, because London’s unpredictable weather and frequent rain made the court slippery, making it difficult for tennis players, and matches even had to be postponed for hours or until the next day due to weather factors.

At Wimbledon 2024, Aldila is the only Indonesian tennis player who will represent the nation.

In her 11th Grand Slam, Aldila also competed in the women’s doubles sector with Asia Muhammad and their progress was stopped in the round of 16. (Ant/Z-1)
