THE journey of Indonesian mixed doubles badminton pair Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto/Lisa Ayu Kusumawati was halted in the last 16 of the 2024 Japan Open, Thursday (22/8), after losing 21-17, 10-21, and 12-21 to the sixth seeds from Hong Kong, Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet.

Rehan/Lisa admitted to being disappointed with their seventh defeat to the Tang/Tse pair in the last seven meetings between the two.

“We played well and won the first game. However, in the second and third games, many of the balls that should have been easy died,” Rehan admitted in a brief statement from PP PBSI, Thursday (22/8).

“I also find it difficult to comment and say anything else because defeats are always like this. And like this again. However, in the future we must continue to try and try again,” added Lisa.

Both of them did not deny that they played in a hurry because they wanted to immediately take points from their opponents. However, this made it easy for their opponents to collect points from their mistakes.

“We want to kill the easy balls quickly and end up killing them ourselves. The no-lob balls are also often wrong and waste a lot of points. Our low balls also often kill themselves,” said Rehan.

“Actually, in the second game, the opponent started to change the game pattern. From playing one-on-one, they changed to playing at a faster tempo. We were lacking
anticipating changes in the opponent’s game pattern. Several times the ball was half I was also impatient,” he continued.

Lisa added, “Actually, we and our opponents were the same. Both were uncomfortable and in a winning and losing position with the wind, plus the heavy nature of the shuttlecock. It’s just that our opponents were better prepared and smarter at outsmarting us to find points.”

Rehan and Lisa stated that they did not want to linger in sadness and wanted to quickly rise from their slump.

“Win or lose, we have to keep communicating. Forget this defeat immediately,” Rehan said. (Ant/Z-1)
