KNMI – Storm Conall

(clears throat) Alright, let’s get this storm-y show on the road!

So, it’s that time of year again, folks. The clocks have gone back, the rain is coming down, and we’re all just desperate to hibernate until spring arrives. But, nope, Storm Conall has other plans! As we’re all excitedly donning our scarves, Conall is ready to put on a bit of a show…or should I say, blow? Yes, it’s going to be windy. Like, very windy. Like, hold onto your toupees windy.

The Netherlands is bracing itself for Storm Conall, which hits on Wednesday, November 27. We’re expecting a lovely mix of heavy gusts of wind in the west and north, and the occasional, “for goodness’ sake, stay away from the window” style gusts of wind along the northwestern coast. A Code Yellow has been issued, because who doesn’t love a bit of an exciting evening?

Of course, you may ask, why Conall? Well, our Irish friends at Met Éireann decided it was a grand name, and who are we to argue? Conall, incidentally, is one of the 2024-2025 storm names concocted with the British Met Office. I imagine the meeting: “Hey, we’ve got Boris…No, not that Boris. Bertha? Gertha? You know what, we’ve got it! Let’s go with Storm Conall.” The world of weather forecasting: full of thespians and drama!

This storm business is rather important, mind you. With Conall expected to put in some severe winter action, you should prepare for things getting just a tad disrupted. Outdoor plans might get tossed about – no pun intended – so perhaps keep the kite and picnics indoors? Just don’t get left blowing about in the rain…because Conall isn’t the name of some lovable cuddly thing.

What does this winterstorm thing mean? Well, let me explain. Essentially, Conall is no mere autumn shower. With storms getting all divided into the rather tidy boxes of winter and summer storms, winterstorms, such as this beast, mean we are expecting all the trimmings – lots of wind and cold temperatures.

So now that you’ve got a rough idea of what this tempest’s all about, the all-important part comes in – “What on earth do I do, dear writer of this terribly fascinating piece of writing?!”

Don’t panic just yet. Your life doesn’t need to be too greatly inconvenienced, though some outdoor tasks may have to be – how do I put it… rearranged. We do, of course, encourage a nice cuppa tea while huddled away safely indoors as the outside tempest unfolds.

(adjusting virtual hat) Now, Conall’s going to be giving those autumn winds a fair shake-up. We trust it all settles back down quite speedily and you folks make the most of the (wind) change.

Alrighty, the end bit is near, and hopefully so is your proximity to the warmth and safety indoors! Storm Conall isn’t a walk in the park – no pun – so make sure to huddle together for warmth until this whole business blows itself out. Happy huddling!
