Bad news for this remake of the cult 2003 game, which is likely to be delayed more than significantly.
This is unfortunately not the first pitfall encountered by this ambitious project since its official announcement in September of last year. The development of the remake of this flagship action RPG of the 2000s, provided by the Aspyr studio for three years, had indeed already experienced significant setbacks with the dismissals of design director Brad Prince and artistic director Jason Minor from the last July. These inconveniences had led the studio to postpone the release date from the end of 2022 to a vague period around 2025…
Disturbances in the Force
The website Bloomberg today continues to bring its share of bad news, with the analysis of the latest financial report of the Swedish giant Embracer, explaining that ” one of the band’s AAA projects has been transferred to another internal studio, in order to ensure the necessary level of quality”. And other major stakeholders in the project, such as Sony and Walt Disney, would have heavily influenced this decision. No need to be a diviner to understand that Aspyr has lost its touch, in favor of the one who until then provided it with simple technical support: Saber Interactive, which has many production sites in Eastern Europe.
An unbelievable optimism
Embracer does not expect any additional delays. But the declarations of Matthew Karch, boss of Saber Interactive, to the shareholders of Embracer, already gave a completely different story at the end of July: “ the game will be fantastic, but it’s a massive job (…) this is especially true in the case of a title so old, very old, that you will have to practically recreate from nothing”. We are far from the well-oiled but simplistic mechanics of a Lego Star Wars !
There remains only the imperishable memory of the one that the fans still affectionately call KOTOR makes you want to wait as long as necessary. The idea of going back on an adventure in the vast Star Wars galaxy, populated by colorful characters and which left the player with a new choice between the Force of the Jedi and the dark side of the Sith remains as attractive as ever. Although since then the versions of the saga have also opened up other perspectives.
