Every year, Forbes releases its ranking of the most valuable sports teams on the planet. A ranking usually dominated by the Knicks in the NBA category, which is confirmed once once more for the year 2022 despite the last slammed season of the New York franchise.
If there is a ranking that the Knicks know how to dominate, it is that of Forbes regarding the most valuable NBA franchises. The team belonging to James Dolan is indeed once once more in the lead, as in 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018… Failing to win a title New York remains at the top with an estimated value of $5.8 billion, ahead of the NBA champions Golden State (5.6 billion) and the Los Angeles Lakers (5.5 billion). These three teams evolve in a universe a little apart since at the foot of the podium, we find the Chicago Bulls with an estimated value of 3.6 billion, far behind therefore. The Celtics (3.5 billion) and Clippers (3.3 billion) round out the Top 6, while the Brooklyn Nets – seventh with a value of 3.2 billion – just manage to get into the Top 50 in all leagues.
In a ranking outrageously dominated by the NFL franchises (among the Top 50, 30 teams come from the US professional football league) but in which there are also eight football clubs including PSG, the Knicks manage to grab sixth place thanks of course to gigantic market in which they evolve, the TV rights and the fact that they play in the legendary hall of Madison Square Garden. Like the Knicks franchise, the basketball mecca is owned by James Dolan’s company – Madison Square Garden Sports – and the whole package is therefore worth approaching six billion dollars. The Big Apple basketball team is narrowly overtaken by two other New York franchises – the Giants (NFL) and the mythical Yankees (MLB) – as well as the NFL trio made up of the Los Angeles Rams (reigning NFL champion) , the New England Patriots (the old dynasty of Tom Brady) and the untouchable Dallas Cowboys – the America’s Team – of Jerry Jones, as usual at the top of the ranking with an estimated value of 8 billion dollars.
Some benchmarks:
- Average value of the teams making up the Top 50: 4.4 billion
- Value of the Dallas Cowboys (1st of the Top 50): 8 billion
- New York Knicks value: $5.8 billion
- Value of Real (first football club in the Top 50): 5.1 billion
- Value of PSG (49th in the Top 50): 3.2 billion

Next step for the Knicks now, to become a competitive NBA team once more to show that the 2020-21 season – punctuated by a return to the Playoffs which slightly increased the value of the franchise – was not just a flash in the pan. Thanks to its geographical position (in the heart of Manhattan) and the famous arena in which it evolves, the New York team is a safe bet on a purely economic level and will remain, whatever happens, among the most valuable franchises in the world. US sports. But the Knicks have a terrible decade to erase, a reputation to rebuild and for that, greenbacks are not enough. We need results, and fast.
Not sure that this first place will console Knicks fans following the failure of last season. On the contrary, it must be quite tiring to hear your favorite team dominate the ranking of the most valuable franchises while the show offered on the MSG floor continues to be mediocre…
