Defeat Kim Su-ji in KG E-Daily Ladies Open overtime
(Yongin = Yonhap News) Reporter Kwon Hoon = Hwang Jung-mi (23) was thrilled to win her first championship on the Korea Women’s Professional Golf (KLPGA) tour following overtime.
Hwang Jeong-mi defeated Kim Su-ji (26) and won the championship on the 4th in the final day of overtime at the KLPGA Tour KG E-Daily Ladies Open (total prize of 700 million won) held at Suning Point Country Club (par 72) in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do on the 4th.
Jung-mi Hwang, who cut three shots on the last day, and Susie Kim, who hit a 4-under 68, finished the third round with a final total of 14-under 202 and played overtime.
Hwang Jeong-mi caught a 6-meter birdie in overtime on the 18th hole (par 5), beating Kim Su-ji, who was on par.
Hwang Jung-mi, who made her debut on the KLPGA tour in 2020, was only ranked 43rd in the prize money rankings for the rookie season, and lost her seed last year and returned to play a seed fight.
However, this year, he took the runner-up place twice, including the NH Investment & Securities Ladies Championship and the Hoban Seoul Newspaper Women’s Classic.
This KG E-Daily Ladies Open was the 65th tournament in which Hwang Jung-mi participated in the KLPGA Tour.
Hwang Jung-mi, who received the winning prize of 126 million won, jumped to 11th place (384.96 million won) in the prize money ranking.
Hwang Jung-mi said, “I was eagerly waiting for the win, but it came sooner than I thought.
Hwang Jeong-mi, who took the lead by one stroke by hitting 10-under-par 62, which is the smallest individual hitter on the regular tour and a course record tie the day before, seemed to be pushed out of the competition for the championship due to a romp of three bogeys and three birdies until the 10th hole.
Hwang Jung-mi said, “I was very nervous because it was my first time playing in the Champions League on the last day.”
While Jeong-mi Hwang was stagnant, last year’s winner Kim Su-ji sprinted for a second straight victory by taking the lead by two strokes with an eagle on the 14th hole (par 5).
Prior to this competition, everyone thought the game was over when Kim Su-ji, who had excellent performance enough to rank 8th in prize money ranking and 5th in grand prize points, took the lead even without winning.
However, Jungmi Hwang did not give up. Hwang Jung-mi, who changed the mood to a 3m birdie on the 12th hole (par 4), put a 5m birdie putt on the 16th hole (par 3) and caught up by one stroke.
Hwang Jung-mi said, “After hitting the 16th hole tee shot, looking at the leaderboard, the difference in stroke was not as big as I thought. I looked back
Jungmi Hwang put a 2m birdie putt on the 18th hole (par 5) and led the game to extra time.
“I didn’t really want to put it in and go to overtime. I just wanted to finish it off with a nice birdie,” said Hwang Jung-mi. “In overtime, I was less nervous than in the final round.”
He put on the birdie putt that decided the championship in overtime and put on a bewildered expression, and explained the feeling at the time, “I mightn’t tell if it was a dream or real life. I mightn’t believe that I won.”
Hwang Jung-mi, who received the Ssangyong Torres SUV as a winning prize, said, “I needed a car for my mother,” and “I want to give it as a gift.”
With Hwang Jung-mi’s victory, the KG and E-Daily Ladies Open continued the record of producing a ‘first-time championship’ champion for five consecutive times.
Although Kim Suji failed to defend the title regretfully, she showed off her close relationship with Suning Point Country Club by placing her name in the top 10 in this competition for 4 consecutive years, including last year’s championship and this year’s runner-up.
Ye-won Lee (19), who hit 4-under 68, climbed to 3rd place (12-under-par 204), solidifying her first place in points for the Rookie of the Year.
