LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp faces a suspension from the club’s upcoming games due to a heated argument with a referee and was strongly endorsed by the Premier League association on Monday.

After Liverpool scored the goal in stoppage time to win 4-2 at Tottenham on Sunday following leading 3-0, Klopp ran straight to the fourth official to celebrate to his face. Klopp, who revealed that he suffered a pulled leg muscle during the celebration, received a yellow card from the referee.

Klopp acknowledged that the booking was justified by the celebration, but then accused Tierney of expressing something “inappropriate” and that the referee has it once morest the club. The German coach also criticized Tierney following last season’s 2-2 draw once morest Tottenham for failing to send off star Harry Kane.

“We have our history with Mr. Tierney. I really don’t know what he has once morest us. Don’t know. He will always say that there is nothing and it is a lie. It can’t be,” Klopp told Sky Sports following the crazy finish at Anfield. “I’m not sure if it’s my fault, the way he looks at me, I don’t get it. My celebration in front of the fourth referee, I didn’t say anything bad, nothing, but it was unnecessary. I was immediately reprimanded, and I pulled a hamstring or adductor strain. It’s okay, it was the right thing to do. But what he told me when he took the yellow off me, that was wrong.”

However, the Premier’s association of referees defended Tierney following analyzing the video of his conversation with Klopp.

“Premier League referees are recorded at all matches,” the association said in a statement on Monday. It added that Tierney “conducted himself in a professional manner at all times, including when he admonished the Liverpool manager, therefore we strongly reject any suggestion that Tierney’s actions were inappropriate.”

Klopp, who also lashed out at Tierney for taking a Tottenham free kick that led to the temporary equalizer, might be suspended with Liverpool have five games remaining in the tournament.

Fifth in the table, Liverpool maintains a slim chance of qualifying for the Champions League but they will have to reverse the seven-point gap that separates them from fourth-placed Manchester United, who have played one game less.

Liverpool have qualified for the Champions League in each of Klopp’s previous six seasons at the club, lifting the European Cup following beating Tottenham in the 2019 final. They lost two other finals to Real Madrid.

Finishing in the Europa League would cost Liverpool around 50 million euros ($55 million) in prize money not received from UEFA.

Liverpool host Fulham on Wednesday and will also host Brentford on Saturday.
