In November, climate activists from the group “Last Generation” poured black paint over the glass-protected painting “Death and Life” by Gustav Klimt in Vienna’s Leopold Museum. There was no damage to the picture itself, and those involved were prepared to pay for the cleaning costs, the “Last Generation” said on Friday. The public prosecutor’s office in Vienna is refraining from indictment. A spokeswoman for the authority confirmed a diversion.
Museum as a stage for protest
The museum served “only as a stage and was not the target of the protest, which was directed at those responsible in the federal government,” according to a broadcast by the “Last Generation”. The fact that cleaning costs – “according to the museum two thousand euros” – were incurred was “not intentional”. However, it was ensured that the washable paint ended up on the protective glass, but not on the paintings and frames.
Two years probationary period
Nina Bussek, spokeswoman for the Vienna public prosecutor’s office, confirmed the diversion. A probationary period of two years was imposed on the two activists involved, during which they may not be prosecuted.
