2023-07-14 07:03:38

The Gmundner Villa Toscana is on 23./24. March 2024 Hotspot of Klimt research

Vienna (OTS) – In March 2024, the Klimt Foundation invites you to the second symposium dedicated to Gustav Klimt. The biennial conference will take place this time in the Villa Toscana in Gmunden am Traunsee, formerly owned by Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein, in cooperation with the salon series “Between Times and Arts” as part of the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut. Under the patron portrayed by Gustav Klimt, the summer residence, which was converted by architect Rudolf Perco, established itself as an important modernist network hub. Submissions for participation in the 2nd Klimt Symposium are now possible.

The Klimt Foundation and the Gustav Klimt Symposium

The Klimt Foundation has been initiating and organizing the international Gustav Klimt Symposium since 2022 on the initiative of the Board of Directors Peter Weinhäupl and Sandra Tretter. The scientific conference is held biennially at different Klimt locations and invites you to discover new angles and perspectives in the work of the Art Nouveau painter and his artist network. Simultaneous translation (German/English) and online live streaming enable worldwide participation. A printed version of the proceedings is published for each symposium.

Gustav Klimt, the Salzkammergut and the Villa Toscana at Lake Traunsee

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) valued the lake landscape of the Salzkammergut as a holiday and creative place. In addition to his regular summer vacations at Lake Attersee, stays in Gmunden, Bad Ischl, Hallstatt, St. Agatha, Golling, etc. are also documented.

The Toscana peninsula in Gmunden was acquired by Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein (1882-1958) in 1913. As the daughter of the industrial magnate, collector and patron of the Vienna Secession Karl Wittgenstein (1847-1913) and sister of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), she established this place as a creative center of art and science. Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein was portrayed full-length in a painting by Gustav Klimt in 1905 (Neue Pinakothek, Munich). The villa, which was converted by the architect and Otto Wagner student Rudolf Perco, became an important modernist network hub and a place for exhibitions, performances and salons. This lively exchange is now being continued on a scientific basis with the 2nd Klimt Symposium, among other things.
