An electric protagonist full of a thirst for revenge is the engine of “Kleo”, an eight-episode German series that can be seen on Netflix starring an incredible Jella Haase.

Kleo is a hitman -a killer in every sense- who works for the Stasi, the government agency of the extinct communist East Germany during the cold war.

Before the fall of the Berlin Wall and following a mission in a bowling alley witnessed by a detective, she is suddenly imprisoned and locked up for a few years. When she walks free, the wall came down and everything changed except her drive to kill those who ruined her.

With loud colors and a chic, retro aesthetic, the series follows the search for this woman who is persecuted in a game of cat and mouse by this policeman from the other Germany, Sven Petzold (Dimitrij Schaad), who witnessed her last job. With a stalled job at the agency, he finds an opportunity to crack a big case – one that, as typically happens, her bosses tell him to hold off on.

Amid offbeat characters and the impact of a new society from which she was cut off, Kleo explores her origins and forges a powerful bond with this agent in a series that blends action with honestly funny black comedy.

The fiction created by Hanno Hackfort, Richard Kropf and Bob Konrad, which already has a confirmed second season, is a journey between Tarantino-esque murders in magical places in Europe (such as the beaches of Mallorca).

Tenderness and even ridiculousness -at times exaggerated in some characters- collide with death in a series that questions how far revenge can take us
