Berlin. The Federal Government’s anti-Semitism commissioner, Felix Klein, has issued a strong warning against moving on to business as usual after the state elections in Thuringia and Saxony. Too many citizens have “either out of protest or conviction preferred authoritarian, racist attitudes to democratic, liberal values,” Klein told the newspapers of the Funke media group (Tuesday editions).
“This development must be taken very seriously and requires a ruthless investigation and appropriate consequences.” The AfD became the strongest force in Thuringia with 32.8 percent and came second behind the CDU in Saxony with 30.6 percent. Klein called for the formation of effective state governments that strengthened basic democratic values.
“A policy that advocates a rejection of responsibility for Germany’s Nazi past is completely unacceptable, especially in Thuringia, where one of the most important memorial sites in Germany, the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial, is located,” he said.
