“I quickly knew at the finish that it wouldn’t be enough”: Odermatt came third in Kitzbühel behind Sarrazin and Schieder

Marco Odermatt had to admit defeat following the downhill double victory in Wengen, but still made it to the podium in Kitzbühel. Cyprien Sarrazin wins the Streif downhill ahead of Florian Schieder. On Saturday there is another chance at the Hahnenkamm race.

More regarding the race:

Marco Odermatt senses in the first corner that something is wrong

Marco Odermatt’s biggest competitor at the moment wins once more. The Frenchman Cyprien Sarrazin came first in the Streif downhill and won in this discipline for the second time following Bormio. Odermatt trembles for a long time, but still makes it onto the podium and comes third behind the Italian Florian Schieder.

“I quickly knew at the finish that it wouldn’t be enough,” says Marco Odermatt following his race. He noticed in the first corner that it wasn’t right and ended up losing time. “I am very happy with my podium finish and was lucky that the hundredth was on my side,” the Nidwalden resident continued. Because only a hundredth separates him from fourth-placed Ryan Cochran-Siegle.

The big favorites in advance

Odermatt or Sarrazin? The favorites in Kitzbühel were named long before the Streif descent. Marco Odermatt started with two downhill victories on the Lauberhorn and Cyprien Sarrazin from France with a victory in Bormio.

Last year Marco Odermatt caused a shocking moment on the Streif descent. He almost lost control of his skis and then withdrew from the second race. In the run-up to the race, Odermatt told SRF: “New year, new race.” One person who wasn’t so lucky this year is Remi Cuche. The nephew of Kitzbühel record winner Didier Cuche injured his knee during training.

Among the remaining Swiss, Justin Murisier is in eighth place and Arnaud Boisset surprisingly in ninth place. With Stefan Rogentin, another Swiss driver is ranked in the top 15. Niels Hintermann and Ralph Weber are leaving.
